Akira Toriyama
...Akira Toriyama was born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1955, and famously began his career in the world of advertising before a late-night entry into a manga competition changed his life. His unique artistic style, characterized by clean lines and a whimsical sense of design, first took the world by storm with the absurdist comedy series Dr. Slump, which earned him the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award. However, it was his 1984 masterpiece, Dragon Ball, that redefined the shonen genre and turned him into a global icon. Despite his massive fame, Toriyama remained famously shy and humble, often portraying himself in his work as a small, masked "Robotoriyama" to maintain his privacy while he influenced generations of artists and storytellers worldwide.
The world was shocked by the announcement of Toriyama’s passing on March 1, 2024, at the age of 68 due to an acute subdural hematoma. His death triggered an unprecedented global outpouring of grief, with tributes coming from world leaders, professional athletes, and fellow manga giants like Eiichiro Oda of One Piece and Masashi Kishimoto of Naruto. Even in his final years, Toriyama remained prolific, having been deeply involved in the character designs and story concepts for the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima and the Sand Land multimedia project. His legacy continues through his timeless characters and a 10-year growth strategy initiated by Toei Animation, ensuring his "universe of fun" remains a permanent fixture in global pop culture.
